The ECT Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to attend a bus crash South of Gisborne. On arrival multiple patients were assessed and sent to Gisborne on various forms of transport including helicopter, ambulance and bus. It is understood that there are fatalities and multiple injuries as a result of the incident. The Hawke's Bay air rescue helicopter was also involved.

The ECT Rescue Helicopter airlifted a 27-year-old Wairoa man from a motor vehicle accident on a rural Tiniroto road. It appears the patient’s motor vehicle impacted a logging truck traveling in the opposite direction. He sustained multiple serious injuries and was attended to by Advanced St John Paramedics at the scene. He was then flown to Gisborne Hospital for further treatment.

The ECT Rescue Helicopter was sent to Tuamotu Island to assist with two men having difficulties. Their boat had run into trouble on the eastern side of the island and become grounded on rocks. The pair then entered the water. One male made land while the second male ran into difficulties and subsequently died. Both men were flown from the island. Our thoughts are with pair's family. NVGs Make Tauwhareparae Rescue Possible

We flew to a remote rural property at the end of Tauwhareparae Road to attend to a 18-year-old male who was suffering an allergic reaction. He was treated by a St John intensive care paramedic before being flown to Gisborne Hospital. This property is in an isolated pocket of our region, with Gisborne Hospital almost an hour and half drive by road. The use of night vision goggles made the remote landing possible.

Busy New Year for the ECT Rescue Helicopter

The ECT Rescue Helicopter completed a few missions over the New Year period, but thankfully we weren't as busy as we were this time last year.

January 3, the ECT Rescue Helicopter was tasked by Police to conduct a search for a 14-foot dingy that had launched from the Port Awanui area near Ruatoria at 9:00am and hadn’t returned. Concerns were raised by family members. After a shoreline search, the boat was located and a short time later the three occupants were located walking north along the rugged coastline. The helicopter crew uplifted the three and dropped them back to their waiting family. It is understood a mechanical failure caused the occupants to paddle to shore.

On Saturday morning, we flew to the north of Gisborne and attended a motor vehicle roll over in the Loisels area. A total of three passengers were flown to Gisborne, one in a serious condition and the other two with various injuries. A fourth person from the vehicle was transported by road.

19:20 - Alerted to Tuamotu Island to assist with two men having difficulties. Their boat had run into trouble on the eastern side of the island and become grounded on rocks. The pair then entered the water and tried to make land. One male made land while the second male ran into difficulties and subsequently died. The mans body was flown from the rocks to the mainland as was the survivor. Our thoughts are with those family members of the deceased. many thanks to Coastgaurd, St John and police who assisted with the rescue and recovery.
